1- Karthik Subbaraj’s writing has failed to work for me since Jigarthanda; the only exception is his segment from Putham Pudhu Kaalai. The trend continues in Mahaan, a gangster epic marred by recycled ideas, rehashed situations, and awful twists. There’s no doubt that Vikram is one of those director’s actors who can quickly sink his teeth into any role, even if the screenplay is terrible. He puts in solid work alongside Bobby Simhaa and Sananth. While questionable in its political commentary, the first half moves along nicely. But everything becomes 10x worse with Dhruv Vikram’s entry. Not only is his performance (of a raging cop, with a backstory of personal vendetta) overpitched and challenging to sit through, but it also clearly shows that he still has a long way to go when it comes to sharing screen-space with his dad. Somebody, please send him to Guru Somasundaram’s acting class in Jigarthanda!
At 2h 40m, Mahaan is a snoozefest not just due to its overly familiar gangster film tropes, but even visually, it’s one of Subbaraj’s weaker films. The entire thread of discussion on Gandhism, juxtaposed with extremism, is a joke. I’ll ignore its half-arsed purpose given it’s a commercial flick, but Subbaraj should know that he cannot reinvent the gangster genre with generic storylines like these. The bizarre sentimental equation between Gandhi (Vikram) and his family tastes like the last piece of bread in the packet – self-explanatory, I believe. Ironically enough, the emotional arcs that define Sathyavan’s (Simhaa) family receive better etching. Also, SaNa impresses with his suave background score.
2- Superb action flick… its full and full fire cracker from the beginning to end. Vikram outshine everyone including Boddy and his son on each frame. Some places SN overdone with too much of gaana… and Dhruv acting looked bit mediocre… The prequel of the movie is so brilliant when we complete the movie… only issue is bit lengthy but racy screenplay overcomes that. Superb movie on current issue without preaching…. Must watch.
