2- Doomsday has always been an exciting topic for filmmakers, hasn’t it? Don’t Look Up is Adam McKay’s contemporary take on the apocalypse, featuring a star-studded cast that certainly makes you sit up, if not look up. The film plays out like a satirical take on how today’s world would react to its foregone conclusion – in this case, a massive comet that’s en route to hit Earth and lead to a big bang. Many scenes work purely because of the ensemble, with both the protagonists Dr. Mindy (DiCaprio) and Kate (Lawrence) well-written and performed. Lawrence tackles hot-blooded Kate magnificently, the younger of the two, who’s understandably distraught that the world doesn’t give two hoots about her finding. DiCaprio is solid good in scenes where he exhibits vulnerability – the one where he loses it during the weekly interview show is particularly well done.
In the one-note President’s role, Meryl Streep is impressive but has less surprises up her sleeve this time around, given we’ve seen her enact so many deplorable characters. Mark Rylance’s smug businessman felt slightly off for me, oscillating between awkwardly funny and slap-his-face annoying. There are many other A-listers, too, including Cate Blanchett and Timothée Chalamet, in roles that don’t really require them but are still fun to see. McKay’s approach at staging satire is hit-or-miss – the political barbs are aplenty, but they’re also painfully obvious – it’s almost like trying to explain to a flat-earther that the Earth isn’t flat. So yes, the sharp editing (by Hank Corwin) and performances see it through, but it’s difficult to place Don’t Look Up among McKay’s greatest work.
